The approach to low back pain involves a bigger picture...

There is still a topic relating to low back pain rarely being discussed and it is a cause for concern.

It is already established that exercise is the way forward as lack of exercise is commonly a cause in a high proportion of LBP individuals. A lack of functional and efficient movement is also commonplace.

However almost all content and "advice" (often inappropriate exercise advice) focuses just on the "mechanical" causes or exercise suggestion.. yet very few talk about and act on an equally important area. ⬇️

The bigger picture. That is lifestyle issues and various other complications such as other health conditions that may be a prominent cause or aggravation.

I'm forever seeing content that adamantly blame certain muscles as the root of all LBP.. and providing a fix with just doing a couple of exercises..

No classification of back pain had been mentioned, nor the ability of a person that these exercises were suggested for, and certainly no consideration to the realities of the bigger picture.

Prioritising "complications" is part of the process to improvement. As one example, obesity may be the leading cause of LBP for some. Tackle the obesity. Reduce back pain. Yes being obese directly relates to a knock on effect on muscle and overcompensatory movements. Muscles here are being made to do jobs they weren't made to do causing strain and imbalances in the lower spine region.

Non-specific LBP makes up the majority of LBP cases because there is no definitive pin-pointed cause, hence a bigger picture approach to ensure the exercise program is appropriate to you.

I have had post surgery clients, where some movements such as full back "extension" will never be fully achieved due to physical limitation. So, we work around it and build strength, improve mobility and flexibility in an appropriate way.

Some individuals are just not exercising efficiently. Lifting too heavy, bad technique and no real structure or foundation to their workouts, and lack of focus on functional movement too.

At GFPT I provide exercise instruction via home visits, workplace visits and outdoor sessions and progress is definitive in a relatively short space of time. I also get hired to re-vamp gym programs and provide health and fitness consultations in the UK and abroad.

As always for any help or queries feel free to get in touch and see how I can help you. ⬇️
